3 February 1977 Thursday
We packed up to move. I took the keys to the Fairlawn office to get £20 deposit returned. We called a taxi, which got there quite soon, and then road to our new place at 87 Canfield Gardens, NW6. Bob Payne was not around when we arrived but was there within a few minutes (the rain had stopped for a while). We moved our things in and settled a few arrangements with Bob. Then we walked to the shops: (1) arranged to rent a TV from Olympic Electronics; (2) ate lunch at the Golden Sun Pancake house [minimal quality]; (3) went to Barclays to open a bank account. The girl there first thought she could accept our Nat’l Bank of SD letter, but her boss insisted on a local reference; we gave the Hallers’ name. Then Mr. Murch in the foreign department helped with further arrangements; (4) Did shopping at Sainsbury’s, or Alice did while Susanna and I (5) went to Gas and Electric Companies to start service; (6) bought some items at the “Ironmongers” (hardware). We returned home and began washing dishes, unpacking, and moving in. It was quite late when we ate and then finally got to bed. I wrote letters to Bob Stark and Marlys Milne to let them know our address, etc.
