1 February 1977 Tuesday
There was a little snow or slush on the ground this morning, but very little stayed on the streets. We got to Mr. Crossley’s office before 11:00 and couldn’t figure out how to get in. No one answered the bell. Another man came by and banged on the door for us. We never saw Mr. Crossley. A secretary was on the phone looking for another job and a Mr. Sudwarts was very discouraging about our chances of getting the Oakdene Park flat. We sat in a pub next to Pollock’s Toy Museum and looked at the paper; then called G. Knight, but there was no word on the flat there [sic] we wanted. We returned home and had lunch. Then we called a number listing a place near Swiss Cottage and decided to take a look at it. Mr. Payne (Bob) showed us around, and after some deliberation we decided to go ahead with it. For £50 per week. Mr. Payne gave us tea at his place, next door, and we gave him a deposit of £50. The place we have rented looks a bit drafty, with wooden floors in most rooms and a stone floor in the kitchen. The ceilings are probably 12 ft. high and the heating is with gas space heaters. The flat is on the first floor ground floor and opens into a sizable garden (yard) out back, which is not in good repair. We will be able to move in on Thursday morning.
We returned home for supper and watched TV afterwards.
